The Great Church or Our Lady Church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Around the year 1540, work had progressed to the tower's circumference, but fate struck shortly afterwards. In the great city fire of 1457, the church and tower were badly damaged. The rebuilding immediately provided an opportunity to change the plans. The church was to have an octagonal tower crowned with natural stone. The final goal, a tower 108 metres high, was not achieved due to subsidence. In 1626, to replace the proposed tower, four colossal pointer boards were installed, which to this day form the silhouette of 'de Dordt Dom'. This gave the tower a height of 72 metres.
