The Fichtelberg railway takes its passengers to the highest town in Germany, the spa town of Oberwiesenthal. It starts at the Cranzahl gauge change station. There you can change from the Erzgebirge railway (standard gauge) to the narrow-gauge railway. After a one-hour journey (over a distance of 17.35 km) through the romantic landscape of the Upper Erzgebirge, you reach the spa town of Oberwiesenthal from Cranzahl at an altitude of 914 metres. Shortly before your destination, the Fichtelberg Railway crosses the Hüttenbach Viaduct, the largest structure on this railway at 110 metres long and 23 metres high.
The spa town of Oberwiesenthal at the foot of the Fichtelberg is the highest town in Germany at 915 metres above sea level. The largest ski resort in Saxony is located here. The highest point in the town is the Fichtelberg at 1215 metres above sea level. The Fichtelberg is the highest mountain in Saxony. It was also the highest mountain in the former GDR. The highest mountain in the Ore Mountains is the Keilberg (Klínovec) at 1244 metres above sea level. It is located only about 2 kilometres from Oberwiesenthal behind the border on the Czech side.
