On a beautiful summer evening this recording was made of the Binnendieze of the beautiful and Burgundian 's-Hertogenbosch, with a view of the Diezehuys.
De Binnendieze is the collective name for a number of streams in the city centre of 's-Hertogenbosch.
Because the city had hardly any room to expand in the past, in the course of time a large part of the Binnendieze has been covered, i.e. overbuilt with houses. As a result, the streams are only visible here and there in the cityscape. This is in contrast to many other cities where the canals often run in front of the houses.
The watercourses used to have the function of sewers. The rodent nuisance had to be controlled by rat-catchers. Halfway through the 20th century it was decided to dampen the Binnendieze, but because of its uniqueness the population resisted and was successful. In 1973 a restoration of the urban water system was started which was completed in 1998.
