This geometric artwork is based on a photo of my favourite tree: the liquidambar styraciflua, or sweet gum tree. In autumn, the five-pointed leaves of this tree turn (almost) every colour of the rainbow for a few weeks. Together with the green, prickly seed balls, this produces almost psychedelic scenes.
I made several digital copies of a photo with a close-up of those leaves and balls. I mirrored, rotated and transparently superimposed those copies in Photoshop.
I was very excited by the results. What a feast of colours and shapes! Only on closer inspection did I spot four angry-looking little devils in the centre of the image. Or well, a couple of shapes that could be interpreted as such.
Anyway, that gave me a good title for the artwork. I did make two of the four little devils smile, though.
