The_Chimpanzee_HMS:The chimpanzees (Pan) are a genus of the humanoid family (Hominidae). This genus consists of two species: chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and bonobo or dwarf chimpanzee (Pan paniscus).
The two species probably split about 2.5 million years ago. The two species are separated by the Congo River. The bonobo used to be seen as a subspecies of the chimpanzee. The West African chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus), a subspecies of the chimpanzee, is also considered a separate species by some. Pan is sometimes considered to belong to the same genus as Homo.
