About the artwork

The Brede Haven of historic Den Bosch ('s-Hertogenbosch) photographed on a beautiful summer evening in July.

Den Bosch was a real settlement, trade and industry city. Due to the rapid growth of the city, it did not take long before the Binnendieze was covered by bridges and arches. In addition, the capacity of a system to cope with water shortages is limited. In the Netherlands, the water supply system is based on the use of a water reservoir. Because of the very narrow sections and the crowdedness on the water, the boats were moved by means of trees. In the Netherlands, the water supply system is based on the use of a water reservoir. The Brede Haven was also built on one of the waterways. There was a lot of activity in the harbor, ships that were not waiting, were loading or unloading. In the harbour it smelled of the goods. The surrounding houses on the Brede Haven got a name that was interwoven with the functions of the harbour. (After the liberation in 1944 the harbour was no longer used, the trade had moved, the buildings were too heavily damaged).
