The Boy and the Goldfish of a Thousand Dreams by KRAB

It’s as if you’re looking back on your own childhood, at a time when anything was still possible and even a goldfish could be your guide to a new adventure.

In this magical watercolour, a boy with a rucksack stands still at the water’s edge. His shoes just touch the wet bank, whilst he looks up at a giant goldfish floating in the air before him like a fiery thought.

The goldfish glows in bright shades of orange and gold, framed by splashes of blue and ochre that suggest water, air and dreams blend seamlessly together. The boy looks small but fearless – as if he is in the midst of a secret conversation that only children and goldfish can understand.

The loose brushstrokes and soft patches make the image light and dreamy, as if you were looking at a memory or a first great fantasy. This artwork feels like an illustration from a children’s book that you keep re-reading, long after you’ve grown up.
