About the artwork

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

Compared to most other parks, the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe has a rather large slope, as it was built on a slope of the Habichtswald just outside the city of Kassel. Consequently, the difference in height between the top of the Hercules Monument and the Wilhelmshöhe Palace is about 230 metres! But it's not just the location that makes the approximately 560-hectare Bergpark (incidentally, the largest park of its kind in Europe) something very special! Look forward to a fascinating journey of discovery through a unique landscape garden full of attractions! The city of Kassel in Germany, located in the state of Hesse on the Fulda river. It is the only urban centre in northern Hesse and is therefore considered the region's economic and cultural centre of gravity. #kassel

Bergpark and Schloss Wilhelmshöhe

The construction of the park in English landscape style Kassel began in 1696 and lasted about 150 years. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

The Bergpark originated as a Baroque garden under the rule of Landgrave Charles of Hesse-Kassel. In 1701, Italian architect Giovanni Francesco Guerniero began building the Hercules monument and the large cascades.
