The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is a Venetian church built between 1631 and 1687 by the architect Baldassare Longhena. The church is located along the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district and is built of white limestone. Apart from the construction, the building was built octagonally in shape and in baroque style. The entire building rests on 100,000 oak poles.
The church was built at the time because it was thought that the plague was finally banned - after a long time, it broke out again in Venice.
