Thailand is bordered to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the west by Myanmar and the Andaman Sea, to the far south by Malaysia and to the southeast by the Gulf of Thailand, part of the South China Sea.
Northern Thailand is extensively forested with a completely different forest type from the rest of Thailand. These forests are mainly formed by deciduous trees such as the teak tree. The north also has many mountains, home to mountain peoples. The highest mountain in Thailand is Doi Inthanon (2590 m). In this area, many rivers run through deep valleys to a central fertile area.
To the northeast is the arid and inhospitable Khorat Plateau, which averages 250 metres above sea level. Parts of it are so infertile and look so barren that the area is also called the Weeping Plain.
In Thailand, you often come across houses like this. According to the Thai, spirits live in these cottages. The cottages are often beautifully decorated and you also often see food and flowers as offerings at the cottage. This is because the Thai do their best to make the cottage attractive to the spirits.
