About the artwork

Teylers Museum's collections are centuries old, but so is its building and furniture. This picture was taken in the museum's fossil hall, with display cabinets full of ammonites, trilobites and other fossilised remains of animals and plants. You really feel like you are stepping back in time 200 years and feel a bit out of place with your modern clothes. I tried to capture that feeling in this photo.

The Fossil Hall at Teylers Museum in Haarlem is an impressive room that houses an extensive collection of fossils. The room, opened in the second half of the 19th century, features carefully designed wooden display cases made of oak and fitted with glass fronts and tops. These showcases display a variety of fossils, from microscopic organisms to large bones of extinct animals, including ammonites, trilobites, and skeletons of dinosaurs and mammoths.

The collection in the Fossils Hall not only has great scientific value, but is also visually impressive and educationally valuable. Each fossil features informative labels and sometimes interactive displays, which help visitors learn more about the history and significance of the fossils. The serene and timeless atmosphere of the hall, enhanced by its historical architecture and wooden display cases, makes it a special place to explore the geological and biological history of the earth. The Fossil Hall thus offers scientists and the general public alike a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of palaeontology.
