A lighthouse or light tower is a tower built near cliffs, or directly on them, straits, entrances to estuaries and harbours to 'warn ships of cliffs or passage at night and in stormy weather, originally by means of an open fire and later by means of mirrors, lenses and a lamp.
Ports or harbour channels also sometimes have one or more lighthouses indicating access and often forming a line of light.
Along the Dutch coast there are 11 large lighthouses (so-called A-posts) and four smaller ones (B-posts). In addition, five more towers are located on the shores of the IJsselmeer. Such lighthouses are the actual successors of the so-called 'vuurpannen' and 'vuurboeten' or fire beacon. Open fires burned in or on them. source wikipedia
