About ‘Te Puia: sacred sculptures and traditions’ by Frank Photos

Located in the heart of Rotorua, Te Puia is an iconic cultural and geothermal centre, famous for its Maori heritage. The photograph shows an intricate wooden sculpture of a traditional Maori face, decorated with moko motifs, engraved symbols evoking the identity, history and spiritual values of the tribes. The eyes, inlaid with paua, a local mother-of-pearl, reflect the light and seem to bring this masterpiece to life.
Te Puia is also known for its spectacular geysers, bubbling mud pools and traditional Maori crafts. As well as cultural demonstrations, visitors can explore workshops where carvers and weavers carry on these traditions. This site is a living testimony to Maori culture, offering a unique immersive and educational experience.
