The turnstone is a bird with a reclusive way of life. The bird has an excellent camouflage of brown, black and grey stripes in the pattern of tree bark. The underside is lighter in colour and marked with thin transverse stripes. A dark stripe runs across the eyes. The straight bill has a sharp point. The bird has short legs with relatively long toes for a better grip on bark.
Its tongue is long and sticky. Snake-like, it can stretch its neck and even turn its head 180 degrees in any direction. Its body length is 16 cm and its weight 30 to 45 grams. It feeds on larvae and pupae of ants, which it removes with its sticky tongue from broken ant hills. It often sits on the ground or on a horizontal branch and is therefore often overlooked.
