The beaver has a broad, scaly, horizontally flattened tail. Its legs are quite short. The hind legs have flippers. Its head is blunt and its ears and eyes are small. The nose and ears can be closed when swimming. There is also a piece of tissue in the cheek that closes the mouth when the animal gnaws underwater. It has a pair of strong orange teeth that are always growing through. They are orange because there is a ferrous substance in the enamel on the teeth that is orange in color, which makes them strong enough to gnaw through trees. It differs from the related Canadian beaver (Castor canadensis) by its lighter coat color and longer nose bones. The fur is yellowish brown to black in color. The most common color is reddish brown. Beavers from northern regions have darker coats than southern animals.
The beaver has a head-rump length of about 75 to 90 centimeters and a body weight of 23 to 38 kilograms.[3] Its tail is 28 to 38 centimeters long. Its size varies by region. There are no size differences between males and females.
