The Sveti Jovan Bigorski Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in western northern Macedonia. It was built in 1020 but destroyed by the Ottomans in the 16th century, restored in 1743 and in 2009 largely destroyed by fire, after which the monastery was completely rebuilt in the original state. This makes it one of the most beautiful monasteries of northern Macedonia. There are still living a dozen monks. The monastery can be visited daily and is definitely worth a visit. Because it is not located around the touristy lake of Ohrid there are only a few visitors. Besides admiring the exterior spaces it is also worthwhile to see the old frescoes in the church.
