The country of Oman is located on the Arabian Peninsula. It is a relatively small country with a landscape characterised by sand and rugged mountains. Sand can be found in the Walibi Sands desert in the south of the country. And along the country's long coast.
Just above where the coast bends from north-south to east-west is Sur. A beautifully ancient fortified city that existed even in the sixth century. Located at the mouth of a bay, it was strategically built in earlier times where the bay meets the sea. A perfect place to control access to the land.
The picture shows the south side of the bay, which seems to protrude into the sea through a bend in the coastline. The tower that stands in front of all the buildings and towers above everything else is the lighthouse, the guardian of the bay.
The low white buildings make the city seem like a mirage in the blue sea and sky. The city must also have been seen from afar at sea in the past.
The white city with lighthouse, the blue of the surroundings and the quiet beach immediately gave my sense of both adventure and travel and purpose and ancient tranquillity. Extraordinary how all that can come together in one image.
