Clouds over the mountains near Rabaçal on Madeira island during sunset at the end of a beautiful summer day.
As the sun begins its descent behind the western hills, the dense, emerald-green canopy of ancient laurel trees and moss-covered slopes is bathed in a golden glow. The mist, so common in this high-altitude valley, softens the fading light, creating ethereal shafts that filter through the trees and dance across the landscape like whispers of fire.
The many levadas—narrow irrigation channels that snake through Rabaçal—reflect the warm hues of the sky. Their gentle flow carries the colors downstream, weaving ribbons of orange, rose, and amber through the forest floor. In the distance, the cliffs and ridges rise and fall like silhouettes from a dream, the setting sun casting long shadows that stretch into the valleys below.
From a vantage point near the Levada das 25 Fontes, you might catch a final glimpse of the sun dipping behind the horizon, its last light igniting the sky in a final burst of crimson and violet before twilight settles in.
