The northernmost point of the Province of Groningen, Uithuizen is located at the Eemshaven mudflats. A mudflat is a mud or sand flat that has formed in a shallow sea. The Wadden Sea is the largest wadden region in the world. This shallow sea consists of bottom sand which is washed up from the North Sea by sea currents. Like many Wadden Sea coasts, the Wadden Sea has a high nature value, which is why UNESCO has declared this area a World Heritage Site.
