A photo of a spectacular sunset on an unforgettable cruise through the fjords of Alaska. The Misty Fjords are an impressive landscape with a variety of fjord-like waters, glaciers, steep rocky cliffs and dense forests. The Misty Fjords are protected as Misty Fjords National Monument and cover an area of about 9,246 square kilometres. The area is part of the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the USA. The Misty Fjords were formed by the retreat of glaciers during the last ice age. The glaciers created deep valleys that were flooded by the sea, forming the characteristic fjord-like waters. The rock faces in the Misty Fjords are breathtaking, often reaching hundreds of metres in height. Many of them are shrouded in dense fog, giving the region its namesake "misty" character. The Misty Fjords are home to a diverse wildlife. They provide habitat for several species of wildlife including brown bears, wolves, moose, sea lions, whales and a variety of birds, including the impressive bald eagle.
