The ancient houses of the Sassi, carved out of the limestone, begin to light up in the soft morning light. The sky is cloudless - thin wisps of cloud catch the sunlight and colour in shades of pink, orange and light blue.
The narrow streets and steps are still in shadow, while the higher church towers are already bathed in sunlight. There is a quiet, serene atmosphere: no people, just the first light slowly bringing the city to life.
