Sunrise in Deventer with Mist

by Edwin Mooijaart

There are mornings when you feel you're in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. This was one of them. After a cold night a thick layer of mist hung over the IJssel, low enough to partially veil the city but leaving the Lebuïnus Church free to stand as a silhouette against the sky. And then that sky. Pink, purple and orange — colours you rarely see this intense at sunrise in the Netherlands. The reflection in the still water of the IJssel doubles the image and turns the river into a mirror of the spectacle above. In the midst of that silence a lone rower passes through the frame. So small and yet so decisive — it's exactly that detail that lifts the image from a beautiful photograph to a real moment. Deventer is a regular destination for me when conditions look promising. Mist and a good sunrise are both hard to predict — when both happen at once, you know you've captured something special. This work brings calm and warmth to an interior. The soft pastel tones and misty atmosphere make it suitable for a bedroom, living room or study.
