Alexanderplatz has always been one of Berlin's liveliest squares. Here you will find shops, cinemas and restaurants. Many sights are within walking distance.
Berlin Alexanderplatz in Mitte is probably one of the most famous squares in Berlin. And certainly the largest. Named after Tsar Alexander I, who visited the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1805, it is usually called "Alex" by Berliners.
Alexanderplatz is the eastern centre of Berlin and an important transport hub - it is home to S-Bahn trains, regional trains, trams, buses and underground trains. Many major sights are also within walking distance from here. This makes Alexanderplatz the ideal starting point for your sightseeing tour of Berlin.
The construction of the Central Market Hall in 1886 and the Tietz department stores' between 1904 and 1911 also made the square the most important shopping centre. It was finally made famous, even world-famous in literary terms, by Alfred Döblin's novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" in 1929. Alexanderplatz is also popular as a film location. Many scenes in the series Babylon Berlin are set on Alexanderplatz. In The Bourne Conspiracy, Bourne meets an agent on Alexanderplatz.
Alexanderplatz only took on its present form in the 1960s after it was largely destroyed in the Second World War. Converted into a pedestrian zone, traffic is now channelled around the square via multi-lane roads. The former Centrum department stores', the adjoining Alex-Passagen shopping centre, the World Time Clock on Alexanderplatz, the Fountain of Friendship between Nations and the Berlin TV Tower were also built during this period.
