It seems as if the gnarled old tree is at the centre of a violent thunderstorm. I have been observing this old tree, living on the edge of a lough near the Bay of Wismar, for many decades. I remember it as a green and vital deciduous tree that defied the wind, the surf and all weathers. And yet the tree became less and less vital from year to year. When I saw it during this storm, most of its bark had already fallen off and its bare trunk had been polished grey-white by the storm and sand. Only in the upper section did I discover the beginnings of bud formation. A hope? It will probably be its last summer.
