About ‘Storm cell over the prairie’ by Marald Bes

A storm cell emptying itself over the plains of Montana.

Up top a wall of blue-grey cloud, below it a strip of grass in a green you hardly see anywhere else. That is the strange light just before a storm: everything picks up more colour than it should have, and it lasts a couple of minutes.

The cloud hangs low with a sharp base and ragged fingers pointing down. On the right the rain is already underneath it, and you can see it reach the ground.

On the left the sun still gets in below, a narrow streak of yellow and orange exactly where the storm ends. That is where your eye stays.

In the foreground a barbed wire fence on wooden posts runs into the distance, and only then do you see how far it goes. The grass is tall and moving with the wind. The horizon is dead straight, and beyond that there is nothing: no tree, no house, no person.

It smells of rain that has not arrived.

On a wall this works as counterweight: mostly dark with one bright band of green. It holds its own beside black, concrete and clean furniture. Definitely one for anyone who loves weather.
