About ‘Looking out over Phang Nga Bay’ by Marald Bes

Phang Nga Bay in Thailand, seen from a viewpoint high on one of the islands.

The water does the work here. Directly below me it is jade green and so clear that the sand bottom shows through; further out it turns to turquoise, and towards the horizon to deep blue. Those transitions follow the depth exactly, so you can read the colour and know what lies underneath.

The limestone islands sit in it, each with steep dark walls and a thick green wig on top. Large in the foreground, smaller and smaller towards the back, until near the horizon they are no more than silhouettes.

The sky is pale and clouded, with a lighter band at the skyline.

Anyone who knows Thailand from Krabi and Phang Nga knows how imposing those rocks are once you are sailing between them.
