The Moeraki Boulders are huge stones scattered across the beach in New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden, on New Zealand's South Island. The stones are beautifully round, and have a circumference of up to 4 metres. They are attributed magical properties and are the subject of legends.
Erosion of the dunes slowly releases them and moves them further out to sea. The boulders formed on the seabed about 60 million years ago, when lime salts accumulated around a hard core.
