About ‘Still the belle of the ball’ by Marjolein Overbeek

In this painting, we see an elegant lady of ninety, ready for an evening on the dance floor. Her hair is still carefully pinned up, her evening gown exudes the grandeur of eighteenth-century high society, and there is not a trace in her gaze of the years that lie behind her. She is radiant. She is clearly still the belle of the ball.

As an artist, I have a soft spot for strong women: women with character, individuality and a story to tell. The eighteenth century continues to fascinate me because of the theatrical costumes, the beauty and the unique way in which women presented themselves. At the same time, I drew inspiration for this piece from Coco Chanel. Her powerful presence, elegance and independent spirit suit this lady surprisingly well. Perhaps she is the Chanel of her time. In any case, age here seems to be nothing more than a number. And the dance floor? She’s far from leaving it yet!
