The depiction describes a reading scene with a 17th-century slant. A candle is burning with a candle sniffer in front of it to shorten the burning wick if necessary.
The candle spreads its light on the booklet containing the reader's squeeze glasses and some notes next to it.
Behind the candle is a fire test with some kindling which in turn can be used to burn coals for heating.
To its right is a rummer filled with wine. The wine is in the "Jan Steen Can" right of it. In the 17th century, the name of this jug was "Tin spout jug". The name "Jan Steen Kan" did not come to this jug until the 18th century, the period when paintings by Jan Steen became popular and this jug was widely used as an object in his paintings.
