This photographic autumnal still life with chestnut fruits was created on my old vintage style wooden kitchen table on 17 September 2015. Freshly collected chestnuts were arranged by me in a decorative composition. Chestnuts (Castanea) or sweet chestnuts are a genus of plants in the beech family (Fagaceae). The genus is distributed in the north temperate zone with about twelve tree and shrub species. Only the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) is native to Europe.
Horse chestnuts (Aesculus) are a genus distinct from chestnuts and belong to the soap tree family (Sapindaceae). The partial name similarity is based on the superficial resemblance of the fruits to the fruit set of chestnuts (brown kernel in a prickly shell) and not on botanical relationship.
