The steam storage locomotive, also called storage steam locomotive or fireless locomotive, obtains its propulsion energy from stored steam. It can be used in potentially explosive atmospheres (e.g. chemical industry, mining, etc.) because it does not involve combustion. Before it is ready for operation, it must be refueled from a steam boiler. Steam accumulator locomotives can move trailer loads of up to 2,000 tons. After 6-8 hours, they must be refueled.
