Admire the design
D'n Flaestoren, built of wood and steel, is an observation tower for the daring among us. Indeed, as soon as you arrive, you will immediately notice the open design of this circular tower. The observation tower consists of eight tree trunks, from the De Utrecht estate, each about 25 metres long and weighing 3,000 kilograms, and a number of slender steel columns.
The route to the 22-metre-high viewing balcony is interspersed with lazy steps and landings, making the tower easy to climb. And the tower's completely open structure means you can enjoy the 360-degree view grandly from every step. The higher you get, the wider the circular tower becomes, similar to the shape of a tree.
Once at the top, you also feel that the tower moves a bit. Perhaps a tad exciting, but on the other hand, on the viewing balcony you also have great views of, among other things, the inaccessible nature reserve of the Flaes and Goorven. Unfortunately, the architectural firm Luijten|Smeulders|Architects that designed this observation tower no longer exists, but you can also find more information about the design via Reijrink.
