About ‘St. Nicholas monastery, Noto, Sicily (Italy)’ by Sander RB

Noto lies at the foot of Monti Iblei. The city overlooks the Asinaro Valley from 152 meters above sea level. Originally, Noto was located ten kilometers northwest of where the city is today, to the left of the Asinaro River.

However, the old town of Noto Antica suffered a major earthquake on January 11, 1693, which almost completely destroyed the town. After the earthquake, a new Noto was built twelve kilometers southeast of the old town, on a level slightly lower than Noto Antica. The city is more beautiful than ever.

Pictured is Noto's famous cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale di Noto; La Chiesa Madre di San Nicolò). This is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Noto in Sicily, Italy. Construction, in the Sicilian Baroque style, began in the early 18th century and was completed in 1776. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, and has been the cathedral of the diocese of Noto since its founding in 1844.

The dome of the cathedral collapsed in 1996 as a result of unresolved structural weakening caused by a 1990 earthquake, to which improper rebuilding in the 1950s may have contributed. It has since been rebuilt and reopened in 2007.
