Springbok in the early morning in the Kalahari desert, Namibia
The Kalahari is a semi-desert in southern Africa. It is an area of approximately 900,000 km². Although it is generally referred to as a desert, it is not, because there is considerably more rain than in a real desert. The Kalahari is a very varied area that includes large stretches of grassy steppe and savannah as well as sand desert. The area covers most of Botswana and eastern Namibia and parts of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Angola. The grassy areas are characterised by long stiff grass, prickly bushes and acacias. There are lions, hyenas, different kinds of antelopes, meerkats and baboons.
