This young woman encounters the putto cupid in spring, outside in a hilly landscape in the field. The angel lies asleep next to his arrows and bow.
Cupid of Amor is in Roman mythology the son of Venus, the goddess of love, and Mars. The Greek equivalent is Eros. He is usually depicted as a naked, chubby little boy with wings and an arrow-and-arch. He shoots, according to myth, magic arrows into people's hearts to make them fall in love.
The girl looks at the scene with a broad smile and is probably happy to have found the source of love. The model is dressed in a very thin, transparent dress, a sheer dress. Underneath it she is braless, completely naked so that her legs, hips, belly, torso and breasts are on the portrait. Her cleavage also leaves nothing to guess and a tit is largely bare.
Otto Theodore Gustav Lingner (25 August 1856 in Kolberg, then Germany, now Poland; after 1930) was a German nude, genre and portrait painter.
After completing his internship in Kolberg, Lingner studied painting at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and continued his studies in Bremen. Together with Fitger he made murals in the town hall of Bremen, then followed him to Hamburg.
Nude paintings dominated his oeuvre. Lingner was also concerned with the technology of colours and is considered to be the inventor of the "Lingner Colours".
