Spotlight on the Reichsburg Trifels in Annweiler

The photo shows the Reichsburg Trifels near the German village of Annweiler in Rheinland Pfalz.
Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, this castle was one of the main sites of Salian-Staufer rule over the Holy Roman Empire and was once the prison of Crusader king Richard Lionheart.

The Reichskleinodien with Crown, Zepter and Reichsapfel were kept in this castle. Today, truthful replicas are on display in the spectacularly staged treasure chamber.

The photo was taken from the Rehbergturm, a tower on a roughly 50-metre-high mountain opposite the Trifelsburg Castle.
From this spot, the view of the castle is spectacular.

During the shot, a changeable day in November, clouds broke open and a sunbeam fell precisely
on the castle, while the rest of the surroundings remained in the shadow of the clouds!

Because the castle is built of light-coloured limestone, it looked like it was giving off light itself.
