Small bird of prey. Essentially light underneath, grey above with broadly banded tail. Always banded on underside (including young sparrows). Rather short, broad wings and long tail with sharp corners. Head does not project far. Long and thin yellow legs and toes. Characteristic flight: a few quick flaps of the wings and then glides. Sears also on thermals.
With its short, broad wings and long legs, the sparrowhawk is well equipped to catch birds in forests and gardens. Main prey are songbirds such as sparrows, tits and starlings. The male is a lot smaller than the female. The larger females do catch larger birds such as turkey turtles and live in a more open area. Sparrows are three-toed and persistent hunters.
