Sparkling-tail (Tryphæna Duponti), John Gould It this species be not one of the most gaily coloured, it is certainly one of the most beautiful of the smaller members of the Trochhdæ; and is no less interesting from the elegance and just proportions of its form, than for the singularly varied style of its plumage; similar markings of the tail exist in the Amethystine Humming-bird (Tryphena Amethystina), but while in that species they are very slightly indicated, they are carried to the maximum in the present bird. This illustration has been restored to its original vibrancy by enhancing colors and removing unwanted marks. A monograph of the Trochilidæ, or family of humming-birds was published between 1849 and 1887 by English ornithologist John Gould. This monumental work depicts and describes all the known species of hummingbirds at the time - comprising 418 lithographic plates and information on 537 species."
