About ‘Sky and Sea in Big Sur – photomontage’ by Götz Gringmuth-Dallmer Photography

In September 2024, we drove along the famous Highway One from San Francisco to Los Angeles and stopped off briefly in Big Sur. The coastal stretch, with its famous cliffs, is worth the trip in its own right. I was particularly fascinated by the interplay between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea there. It not only fascinated me but left such a lasting impression that I keep playing around and experimenting with these colour variations.

The result is another photomontage, which actually consists of just one photograph that I’ve layered on top of itself and given varying degrees of transparency.

In this way, I aim to convey the depth and three-dimensionality of nature onto the two-dimensional plane of a photograph. Whether – and, if so, how well – I succeed in this lies, as always, in the eye of the beholder.

I am convinced that this composition works best when the image is printed very large and hung on a wall. Of course, it also has its charm when small.
