The Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a large, aggressive crocodile found in rivers, lakes and swamps. It can grow up to 6 metres long and sometimes weighs more than 900 kilograms. With its powerful jaws and sharp teeth, it hunts fish, birds and mammals, including large prey such as zebras. Nile crocodiles are known for their ambush technique: they wait silently in the water and strike at lightning speed. They play an important role in the ecosystem as top predators. Although their population is stable, they are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their skin and meat.
