About ‘Sitting nude 5’ by Joan Engels

This artwork was originally started with cutting shapes
Paper cutting art is the art and craft in which a cutter cuts or carves shapes out of paper with scissors or a knife. Pasted on a differently coloured background, the outlines give a nice contrast. This also creates a suggested relief. These artfully cut shapes form a special composition with an almost 3D-like spatiality.
The contrast between the brown-red and turquoise-blue colours and the graphic effect make the artwork a beautiful eye-catcher in most sleek interiors.

Almost all my works start with a sketch first and then, in this case, the cut-out shape of painted cardboard
And continued over that with a surprisingly playful play of lines.

Art should surprise, inspire and for me, being allowed to make art is not work but oxygen why I live.

Joan Engels is an artist but has also worked for 30 years as an illustrator/graphic designer for various publishers.
I am more picture maker and less talk maker
And where some like to read or write for relaxation I draw or paint....
I make a lot of commercial illustrations for my work but in my spare time, I enjoy creating real art more.
In my painting style, I like to choose evocative multi-colour use of colour and whimsical or just stylised lines.
