Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British painter and a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelites. He was known for his idealised depictions of mythological and medieval subjects, often in a romantic, almost fairy-tale style. Burne-Jones' works, such as *The Beguiling of Merlin* and *The Golden Stairs*, are characterised by a precise attention to detail and symbolic depth. He worked closely with other Pre-Raphaelites such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and influenced the Art Nouveau movement.
