About ‘Silence in Korte Koediefstraat, The Hague’ by Robert Jan Smit

Tucked away amongst the busier streets of The Hague lies Korte Koediefstraat, a place where the city seems to pause for breath. In this photograph, the eye is naturally drawn forward, along a narrow street that winds its way through the buildings like a quiet artery, towards the Fluwelenburgwal.
The power of this image lies in the contrast. On either side stand façades, each telling its own story: from classic brick architecture to sleeker, more modern lines. The subtle differences in colour and texture lend depth, whilst the soft light gives the street an almost timeless feel. There is no rush, no hustle and bustle – only the silence of a city yet to awaken, or perhaps one that has just settled down.
In the background, modern architecture looms, standing in sharp contrast to the more traditional buildings in the foreground. This interplay between old and new is characteristic of The Hague: a city where history and innovation do not supplant one another, but rather reinforce each other. The geometric shapes and interplay of lines draw the eye ever deeper into the composition, as if carrying the viewer along the street.
What makes this place special is its understated nature. It is not an iconic square or a famous monument, but rather an everyday part of the city that is often overlooked. Yet therein lies the beauty: in the simplicity, the tranquillity and the subtle interplay of light and architecture.
A moment of silence, captured between walls that have borne witness to the life passing by here for generations.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
