Despite its comparatively low altitude, the Brocken peak is already above the natural tree line. With 307 days of fog, it is the European leader. On 178 days there is a blanket of snow on the summit. The average annual temperature on the Brocken is 10.3°C in July and -4.2°C in January. The climate on the Brocken can be compared to that of Iceland or the climate in the Alps at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,200 metres. The Brocken summit is the windiest place in Germany and Central Europe. On average, the wind blows at six gusts or 42 km/h throughout the year. Gale-force winds are recorded on more than 100 days a year and the highest wind speed was measured on 24 November 1984 at 263 km/h.
