The Siberian ground squirrel - the name says it all - is not native to our regions, it is a bit of a mystery where the Tilburg colony came from. Several stories circulate about this. The most plausible story is that in 1972, during the closure of the former Burgers Dierenpark in Tilburg, when the animals were being moved to other parks, a crate containing about 250 Siberian ground squirrels broke, allowing the squirrels to escape. Another theory is that the animals were left behind when the zoo closed because their enclosure was demolished during the time they were hibernating in their ground burrow.
