About ‘Sheep: A Complex Mirror Image of Our Time and Ourselves’ by Arjen Roos

'Sheep' is not a simple work of art; it is a multifaceted and multi-layered reflection on both the artist and society. This digital and AI-enriched masterpiece defies traditional conceptions of art and raises questions about what we consider 'real' art. It is an invitation to a broader and more inclusive art dialogue, and in many ways a personal expression of my own dualities and insecurities as an artist.

But the work goes beyond the medium or creator. It also highlights our alienation from the natural world, specifically our relationship with animals. In a society where the truth is often distorted by the food and meat industry, this work acts as a wake-up call of sorts. It challenges us to look beyond the cheap piece of meat on our plate and consider the ethical and moral implications of our choices.

The audience watching the screens in fascination, and the profusion of 'BAA'texts on the billboards, symbolise our tendency to blindly accept what is presented to us, both literally and figuratively. We are like 'sheep' following the herd, insensitive to the reality that surrounds us.

A central pole reminiscent of a speaker system, and the misty haze in the background, reinforce this theme of manipulation and disinformation. They suggest a veil of ignorance that obscures our vision of the world, and even of ourselves.

So, 'Sheep' is more than just a work of art. It is a manifesto, a question and answer, and above all a complex expression of the many challenges and issues we face in this modern, digital and increasingly alienated world.
