On the southwestern edge of Denmark, where the mudflats stretch out under a silent sky, an artificial pier of stacked stones rises from the water. In its extension stands a heron - motionless, like a living extension of the pier itself. Its reflection gently sways in the calm water, a reflection of vigilance and stillness.
The tranquillity seems complete, but is only apparent. The heron is alert. Any breath of wind, any movement could break the moment. And then it happens. Just too late for the camera's shutter, but not for the eye: with a powerful stroke, his wings lift him up. The silence is broken by the swish of feathers, as his reflection slowly dissolves into the dark mudflats.
A flight caught in memory, an image that lingers.
