Here you can still see an old seawall in the Vatrop nature reserve.
Wieringen was an island until 1930. You can see this in the so-called wierdijken (dikes). These are dikes of compacted seaweed thrown up by the inhabitants to protect their island from the sea. Wierden dikes were built in other places in our country, but only on Wieringen have the remains been preserved. A beautiful reminder of the time when Wieringen was still an island.
