This is a cyanotype from the series: Memento Lytje Pole
This artwork is a memory of Schiermonnikoog.
The execution on 'tea-bag-paper' gives a dreamy print.
The unpredictable creation process created this unique artwork.
Just like a visit to Schiermonnikoog.
Cyanotype is a photographic process. The chemicals ammonium iron citrate, potassium ferricyanide and water are mixed, and applied to paper. A photonegative is placed on top and exposed to UV (sun) light. The result is a monochrome image in (Prussian) blue tones.
There are many aspects that influence the process unpredictably such as paper type, chemistry, exposure time, humidity, et cetera. Each work is unique.
I am Natasja Vugts and have a lifelong connection to Schiermonnikoog.
Lytje Pole is a warm home where I find peace and quiet. At the same time, the island always manages to surprise me. The seemingly endless beach, the dunes in the elusive light, forests, salt marshes and mud flats colour in the changing seasons.
Schiermonnikoog reminds me of who I am, where I belong, challenges me to look, to look again, to look further. A new look at something so familiar.
It is an island that shares its magic again and again, making it always a place of inspiration for me.
