About the artwork

Photo of Schenkenschanz, taken at sunrise.
Schenkenschans) is a parish in the German municipality of Kleve in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. As of 31 December 2015, Schenkenschanz had 102 inhabitants[1] in an area of 0.38 km². Schenkenschanz is located directly on the south side of the Rhine River about five kilometers from the center of Kleve at the confluence of the Rhine with Griethauser Altrhein.

Schenkenschanz is an old fortress surrounded by water. It could be reached by ferry from the hamlet of Düffelward until 2016. By land, it can only be reached via the Altrhein Bridge from the old town of Griethausen, which also belongs to the municipality of Kleve.

With a surface area of 38 hectares, Schenkenschanz is the smallest "district" of Kleve. Ninety percent of the village lies in an area that can flood during high water; these grounds are part of the Salmorth nature preserve. Only ten percent of the Schenkenschanz cadastral unit is built on. Two-thirds of the built-up area is surrounded by a flood wall. The remaining built-up area is protected against flooding by a dike.
